In 2002 the MAV launched a Community Groups Insurance Scheme through its public liability arm, Civic Mutual Plus, in partnership with ourcommunity.com.au and Jardine Lloyd Thompson and supported by the Victorian Government.
Arising from a concern that not-for-profit community groups were facing large premium increases, even the unavailability of cover, the Community Groups Insurance Scheme is specifically designed to provide affordable cover.
Each Council member's CMP policy is the vehicle through which community groups are insured, each group being granted cover as an "additional named insured" on the Council's policy. The groups are not participants or members of the scheme.
The scheme provides insurance that indemnifies not-for-profit community groups against legal liability for personal injury and property damage arising out of negligence caused by their activities or products.
Two levels of cover are provided: $5million and $10million with a standard excess of $1000 applying to every claim.
Eligibility
Eligibility for inclusion in the scheme applies to not-for-profit groups that:
- Provide a public benefit or serve a charitable purpose
- Are not controlled or appointed by business or government sectors
- Do not return profits to the owners or managers
- Essentially control their own affairs even though they may have grants or other sources of funding from business and government sectors
- Engage the services of volunteers
- Have an institutional structure (e.g. incorporated)
Cover is also available for most community events, celebrations and festivals that do not have sporting or adventure activities. Organisations dealing in sporting and adventure activities and emergency services are not eligible for insurance cover under this scheme.
